Long-time Living Choice Woodcroft resident, Jan Clements, sent us her story this week and we thought it was worth sharing.
“My journey started 18 years ago when I left Auckland and headed for Adelaide, bought a house, got a job, retired 5 years later and decided to live a more stress-free life. There’s more to life than house maintenance…right?
Easier said than done! Where to go? Which retirement village to choose? Who has the best options? What a minefield! I spent 2 years exploring all the options but in the end the decision was an easy one. I chose a village formerly known as Fernleigh Gardens (now Living Choice). It didn’t have all the bells and whistles – no community hall, nowhere to get together except for each other’s homes or our green tin shed.
Despite all of this it had a `feel’ and whenever I drove in there was this ‘feeling’ that no other village had. So, almost 10 years ago I moved into this village that just had ‘heart’.
The road travelled from then to now – 2018 – has been exciting, never dull, relaxing and almost inspiring. We hired marquees for special events like the Melbourne Cup and there was always a positive attitude of the residents to make it work. Then heartache as the village went into receivership. This was such a scary time, but we pulled together and made the most of what we had, not allowing it to tear us apart.
As if we were being rewarded for our commitment, along came the proverbial genie out of the bottle! Living Choice saw the potential, rescued us and had the vision to take this band of merry residents and turn the village into the state-of-the art village that it is now. From bankruptcy just three years ago, we now have beautiful villas, apartments and a $7.5 million leisure centre complete with a fabulous swimming pool, hair salon, gym, wellness centre etc.
The decision to move into this village was the best decision I ever made, except for the one made to come to Adelaide! The camaraderie, friendships, easy living and the fact that the owners of Living Choice have our best interests at heart, sets this village apart. We can even enjoy a holiday in one of our sister villages for a nominal nightly fee.
I hope this story will assist those who are considering retirement village living – after all, it’s one of the most important decisions you will have to make. I’m happy to discuss this with anyone going through the process at the moment. I can be contacted through the office on (08) 7320 3663.”
