Breast cancer survivor raises $3,560 for research

Together with thousands of other women in Australia, Marj Hines of Living Choice Twin Waters is a breast cancer survivor. She is also a great-grandmother and she wants to ensure that her great-grandchildren won’t know what “breast cancer” means “because by the time they grow up, hopefully the disease will no longer exist”.

Marj is a recent survivor and, together with her family, she came up with the idea of hosting a Breast Cancer Survivors’ Cocktail Party to raise funds for cancer research. More than 110 people turned up to support the event, raising an incredible $3,560 in one evening.

The leisure centre was transformed into a sea of pink for the event with guests wearing pink and pink decor adorning the walls and tables. Prizes were awarded for the best dressed and new resident Glenda Bretton stole the show in her pink wig, winning best dressed female. Terry Dale was voted the best dressed male and Graham and Jenny Boggs won best dressed couple.

Guest of honour and fellow cancer survivor Di Olson, whose touching story was recently featured in My Weekly Preview, also attended and spoke of her quest to raise further funds for vital research. Together with her friends she is taking on the Step Towards A Cure – Great Wall Trek 2016, when the women will trek the Chinese wall across five days in May next year. Details about the trek can be found on the My Weekly Preview website.
