The 9th Retirement Village Bowls Challenge, an annual event open to all Central Coast retirement villages, was held at Avoca Beach Bowls Club on 24 July. Living Choice villages – Alloura Waters and Broadwater Court – are regular participants but have never recorded a winning team until this year. And it was done in style!
Alloura Waters village was represented by 5 triples teams – up from 3 teams last year – and absolutely stole the show. Four of the teams won their 1st round games and were matched with other winners to decide the overall winners. When the scores were finalised it was found that the two leading teams had recorded overall margins of 40 shots and a count back on winning ends was required. The outcome was:
1st place – the Alloura Waters rink skipped by Jean Paviour-Smith with Rob Capon as 2nd and Don Paviour-Smith as lead;
2nd place – the Alloura Waters rink skipped by Rebeca Blackwood, Ken Lovett 2nd and Heather Lovett as lead.
As well as winning prize money for their efforts Alloura Waters is now registered on the Retirement Village Challenge trophy as the 2017 winners – a first for the village and a great achievement by their bowlers.
Seven teams from Broadwater Court also took part and certainly looked very smart in their brand new bowls club uniforms. They won three of the afternoon matches, a cash prize of $60 and one participant won a meat tray in the raffle. Bowls convenor Colin Kendrick said the majority of their bowlers only took the sport up after the new green was laid. “The improvement in their skills over the previous weeks has been very encouraging and due to the enthusiasm, we now play four times a week.”
